De Young Properties Lowest HERS Score - 57!
The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) is an independently tested scoring system designed to measure a home’s energy-efficiency. Homes with lower scores are more energy-efficient and have less of an impact on the environment while those with higher scores are not as energy-efficient. The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that a typical resale home scores 130, and a typical new home scores 100, on the HERS Index.
De Young Properties is proud to be building homes as LOW as 57 on the HERS rating scale. Visit a De Young Welcome Center today to learn more!

Energy Star® qualified Rinnai Tankless Gas Water Heater
Rinnai Tankless Water Heaters provide an endless supply of hot water, whenever, wherever to meet homeowner’s demands—even for multiple tasks at the same time. In addition, Rinnai Tankless Water Heaters earn an Energy Factor (EF) rating of up to .96 (meaning that 96 percent of the energy used goes directly to heating the water), are compact in size, and offer a longer lifespan than traditional tank-style water heaters (up to 20 years). Rinnai offers homeowners the ultimate hot-water experience and a whole new way to think about hot water.
Energy Star® qualified Bathroom Exhaust Fans
Broan exhaust fans have two key benefits: 1) they are extremely quiet with a rating of only 0.7 sones, and 2) with Broan Sensaire® technology they automatically turn on and off depending upon the humidity level in the bathroom. The automated Sensaire® technology and low-sone engineering of this Broan fan make it a perfect fit for our advanced EnergySmart™ homes.

Anlin Monte Verde Argon Gas Filled Dual Pane Windows with Triple-Layer Solar Control
Anlin Monte Verde argon gas filled, dual pane windows with triple-layer solar control low-e glass.
Windows are a great way to allow natural light to flow into a home. However, windows also allow heat loss or gain. That’s why we use special window systems in our De Young EnergySmart™ homes to simultaneously achieve the benefits of natural light, as well as better thermal performance to keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
To achieve this, our vinyl Anlin Monte Verde windows are dual pane and have triple-layer solar control low-E glass. This technology allows our windows to block 94% of home interior-damaging UV rays, and more than 75% of the radiant heat from the Sun.
Radiant Barrier Reflective Insulation System and Roof Vents
To the lay person, radiant barrier may look simply like aluminum foil. Surprisingly, they would actually be correct! But, more importantly, radiant barrier is a material used to block radiant heat from the sun in modern home construction. Developed by NASA during the Apollo space program in the 1960’s, radiant barrier was used in their spacecrafts to protect from the extremes of outer space.
These days, it has become a great technology for energy-efficient home design. Applied to the underside of wood panels installed on our roofs, it is able to block up to 97% of the sun’s radiant heat, which can drop our attic temperatures up to 35 degrees. This saves our homeowners money by keeping heat out during the cooling season.
Superior, Formaldehyde-Free Insulation and Air-Sealed Construction
When it comes to high-performing energy-efficient homes, the thermal envelope is one of the most important elements to focus on. De Young EnergySmart™ homes takes this to heart, since the thermal envelope is the barrier to the temperatures outside.
To protect against heat gain and heat loss, De Young EnergySmart™ homes reach a substantial R-49 of blown-in attic insulation and up to R-25 in the wall systems.
It is equally important that the envelope be properly air-sealed. After all, who wants to waste money heating and cooling the outside of their home? An air-tight home also reduces the potential for uncomfortable drafts. Employing “Best Practice” construction techniques throughout the build of the home, also helps boost the thermal performance.

What is a De Young Zero Net Electric home?
De Young EnergySmart™ homes are among the most energy-efficient in the state of California. De Young has taken it one step further by offering multiple floorplans with the Zero Net Electric option.
The Zero Net Electric option brings our homes to the forefront of a positive evolution that will modernize the home building industry, as it is designed to reduce annual electricity usage to zero! Using advanced building science, these homes will generate savings by combining De Young EnergySmart™ features with the power of a solar energy system.
In addition, with the advent of the solar lease, a solar power system (which is necessary for a home to offset its energy use) is now more affordable than ever! Inquire with a De Young Associate for additional details and to learn if our Zero Net Electric option is available for the floorplan you like best.
De Young Zero Net Energy Home
A giant step beyond a Zero Net Electric Home is a Zero Net Energy Home. In collaboration with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), De Young Properties built a ZNE Home, which is designed to produce as much energy as it consumes each year, which also zeroes its energy-related carbon impact on the environment.
The De Young Zero Net Energy Home supports California’s Long Term Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan that requires all new residential homes in California to be ZNE by 2020. This concept home will be used as a Model Home so De Young and PG&E can monitor and analyze the energy usage.
De Young and PG&E are once again teaming up to build the De Young ZeroEnerG3 Home (ZEG3), stay tuned to learn more about the De Young ZEG3 home by subscribing to our blog here!
The De Young Zero Net Energy Home is now open for public viewing at the De Young Armstrong Welcome Center located on the west side of Armstrong, just south of Gettysburg in Clovis. For more information, call 559-323-6004 today!
